When a new OS hits RTM the first thing I do is find the change in Notepad…
But this time with Windows Vista, nothing, strange because:
Windows 95, notepad is born with a 16kb or 64kb file limit, can’t remember
Windows NT4, “no” file limt
Windows 2000, you can use go to line number, great to solve those error in myscript.vbs at line 395
Windows XP, you can see the line number when enabling the status bar
But in Windows Vista….. Nothing found so far, but what did I see in my Bink.nu rss feed?
XML Notepad 2007, it looks like they woke him up and gave him an actual project to work on, check yourself, a quantum leap!

Hopefully you are already familiar with BDD 2007. BDD 2007 is the way to go for rapid Vista deployments. BDD 2007 also supports legacy OS deployments like Windows XP.

But what do you need besides Rapid deployment… You need guidance about how to configure Vista in a secure way. Check it out at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/security/implementing_security_baseline.mspx#EUFAE and be sure to download the GPO accelerator at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A3D1BBED-7F35-4E72-BFB5-B84A526C1565&displaylang=en&Hash=GN8kgiSbeEVYMnBK%2bgsHfJ7qlkQMZhCNUc23BQv3gMHV%2bKVs8S1YTOwD0eU6IFzEzWVOGWq6XO8vQfuo3PFhJQ%3d%3d#filelist

When I first saw a Vista profile, I was a bit surprised. For six years we all experienced major problems with legacy applications and for some reasons the spaces in the Vista user profiles are gone. Weird… And besides that for some reason locations of some well know folders are changed from what they were.

The question is, are they really gone and is the location really changed? Yes they are but for compatibility reasons they are still there as junction points. Let’s have a look…

On a Vista machine start a command prompt, hopefully you get to the same place as I do, …

Type dir at the command prompt, you see about 10 folders, nothing wrong.

Try this, dir /ad, fun Junction Points, with the old Windows 2000/XP folder names but redirected to their new locations.

Go one directory back so you are in C:\Users, try dir followed by dir /ad, another Junction point and a SYMLINKD, probably something like a Symbolic Link, not much info on the web.

If you wonder if Documents and Settings is still there, yes it is, try dir /ad from the root…

Want to know why, well this has everything to do with application compatibility and the way a program ask for well know folders. Wanna know more? Try the link below, it tells you everything about the new Vista profile
