Postmarking: the fight againt SPAM continues
Posted by PSlijkhuis in Exchange, General, OfficeThe recently started blog of the Microsoft Outlook team reported a new feature called Postmarking. This actually slows down email sending. But more important it is an extra feature within the built-in junk email filter of Outlook 2007.
There is, unfortunately, a catch. It will only work with receiving and sending Outlook 2007 clients. I don’t believe Microsoft will open this feature for use in other mail clients, except for their own Hotmail / Live mail.
Nevertheless I like the – little naive – way they think: slow down email behaviour so a spammer will have to expand computer power. Like they won’t use botnets or hack some else’s computer to send on be-halve…?!
The better part is that it is all “under the hood” functionality. Great! As a consumer I do not wish to be burdened with this stuff. My ISP (or IT dept.) should take counter measures.
I will put my money on the mail server initiatives like DKIM, SMTP authentication, EmailXT instead of client/point solutions.

Hey Paul,
Wanted to mention some of the things in you articles are not correct. All desktop clients like outlook2007, windows mail live desktop and windows mail has the capabilities to generate the puzzle.
It makes sense only at client machines, as they are individual machines and only point of origin for spam should be punished in terms of computation.
It will now make day to day email sending slower. Only if you send million emails or send an email to million recipients, it will slow you down; the way it should be.
Thanks,
Mihir
Thanks for the extra comment Mihir. Of course, I write things down so people are triggered
