Microsoft has released a new version of Virtual PC. This new version is supported on Windows Vista and is able to run Windows Vista. Also it has hardware virtualisation support.

Hardware Virtualisation

Here at the Innovative Technology Weblog we’ve used the Release Candidate for a few months now and we were surprised to see how smooth it runs on Vista, even with Vista as a guest OS.

You can use Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 to run multiple operating systems at the same time on the same physical computer. Switch between virtual machines with the click of a button. Use virtual machines to run legacy applications, provide support, train users, and enhance quality assurance.

Virtual PC lets you create separate virtual machines on your Windows desktop, each of which virtualizes the hardware of a complete physical computer. Use virtual machines to run operating systems such as MS-DOS, Windows, and OS/2. You can run multiple operating systems at once on a single physical computer and switch between them as easily as switching applications—instantly, with a mouse click. Virtual PC is perfect for any scenario in which you need to support multiple operating systems, whether you use it for tech support, legacy application support, training, or just for consolidating physical computers.

I’ve also installed it on my Vista laptop and I must say that it’s very fast!

The new features are a bit slim for 3 years of development:
    - Support for x64 Windows as a host operating system
    - Support for hardware virtualization support
    - Support for Windows Vista as a guest and host operating system (not 64 bit)
    - Support for PXE network booting of virtual machines
    - Support for the use of fullscreen virtual machines on multi-monitor systems (VM still stays on just one monitor though)

    Still missing basic things like:
    - USB Support
    - Cloning virtual machines
    - Snapshot technology
    - Running a VM as a service

One of the main reasons for running virtual machines is testing en running legacy machines. But Microsoft stops the support for the following guest OS’s:
    - MS-DOS® 6.22
    - Windows 95
    - Windows 98
    - Windows Millennium Edition
    - Windows NT 4.0 Workstation

The only supported OS’s are: Vista, XP, 2000, 98 SE and OS/2 warp.

    I agree with wiebe.

What i miss the most is x64 guest systems. This is the biggest miss of them all. When you are an IT pro person now a days you need x64 bits enviroments.

So i hate to say it but i still need VMWARE Server 1.0.1 and waiting for LongHorn

    See ya
